Scott Schultz and Christian Jacobs were two Mormon dads living in southern California with an idea for a children's television show that was kinda far out there.
The idea - a DJ with a magic suitcase filled with some highly unique characters in bright colors that sing and teach lessons like "don't bite your friends" and "there's a party in my tummy."
The two Mormon dads pooled their money and limited resources together and produced a pilot episode. They called the show "Yo Gabba Gabba", after the words the DJ uses to make the characters come to life (easier for kids to say than "abracadabra".
The pilot began to circulate on the Internet until it was viewed by fellow Mormon and Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess. Hess then phoned a contact at Nickelodeon and soon "Yo Gabba Gabba" was on TV.
Schultz and Jacobs have been friends since they were teenagers growing up in southern California. They both served missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They began working on Yo Gabba Gabba soon after returning. Schultz was even the Primary chorister for the year he was developing the show and used the kids to test out ideas.
